Garrano

In 1948 there was around 40 000 Garranos in Portugal. From then onwards the numbers have been drastically reducing due to the mechanization of the farm work and cross-breeding with exotic breeds. In 1994 EEC classified Garrano as a breed in danger of extinction. In 1993 the necessity to identify and preserve the breed lead to foundation of Registo Zootécnico (R.Z) and defining the standard of the breed. Later on R.Z. was upgraded to a Stud Book.

In R.Z. was registered all adult (older than 3 for females and 4 for males) ponies that would meet the standard, even that their lineage was unknown: bay of colour, height of 135cm or less and straight or concave profile. All the registered ponies were branded with "G" on the right hind leg and R.Z. number on the right shoulder.

From the R.Z. registry foundation of L.N and L.A. books were possible. L.N. is the register for offspring of the R.Z. and L.A. registered ponies. All are branded: letter of the year (P = 1996, etc.) and sequential number, on the right shoulder. L.A. is the register for adult (older than 3 for females and 4 for males) ponies already registered in L.N. after they have been graded as breeding animals. Then the ponies are branded with "G" on the right hind leg.

All the ponies registered in the Stud Book are blood typed for identifying genotype and further offspring control.
